Introduction

Alitini Design is an architecture and design firm that specializes in creating unique and captivating spaces that enhance the customer experience. We are passionate about using our expertise to transform our clients’ visions into reality, and we are proud to have a proven track record of success in a variety of industries.

In this case study, we will showcase our work on Molo 5, a vibrant open-air bar and restaurant complex located along a riverfront in Italy. This project presented a unique challenge: to create a cohesive and inviting space that would accommodate five distinct dining experiences while maintaining a sense of openness and connection to the surrounding environment.

Design Concept

Our design concept for Molo 5 was inspired by the idea of creating a gigantic open-air piazza, where guests could gather, socialize, and enjoy delicious food and drinks under the sun or stars. To achieve this vision, we employed a combination of architectural elements and design details that would foster a sense of community and enhance the overall dining experience.

Layout and Structure

The heart of Molo 5 is a large, open-air plaza furnished with wooden tables and shaded by festive string lights. This central gathering space provides a sense of unity and connection for the five distinct dining experiences that surround it.

The five dining experiences are housed in four unique kiosks and a central bar. Each kiosk is designed to reflect the culinary theme of its respective restaurant, creating a visually diverse and engaging environment.

  • The pizzeria is housed in a wooden cabin with a rustic, inviting ambiance.

  • The grill restaurant features a modern, industrial aesthetic, complete with exposed brickwork and metal accents.

  • The Japanese restaurant exudes an elegant, minimalist style, with clean lines and natural wood finishes.

  • The octopus restaurant boasts a playful, nautical theme, with blue and white accents and a wave-shaped roof.

The central bar, located at the entrance of the plaza, is designed as an open-air pagoda. Its transparent structure allows for both privacy and connection, providing a focal point for the entire complex.

Design Details

To further enhance the sense of openness and connection, we incorporated several design details throughout Molo 5.

  • Wooden walkways connect the different areas of the complex, creating a seamless flow of movement.

  • Strategic lighting illuminates the space both during the day and at night, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

  • Landscaping elements, such as trees and planters, add a touch of nature and soften the overall aesthetic.

The Challenge of Open-Air Design

One of the primary challenges of designing Molo 5 was to create a space that would be both open and inviting while also providing shelter from the elements. To achieve this, we employed a combination of design strategies:

  • The use of sails provides shade and protection from the sun and wind without blocking the view of the riverfront.

  • Strategic placement of the kiosks creates windbreaks and sheltered areas for guests.

  • Heating elements can be deployed during cooler months to extend the outdoor dining season.

Conclusion

Molo 5 is a testament to Alitini Design’s ability to create unique and captivating spaces that meet the specific needs of our clients. By combining innovative design with a deep understanding of the customer experience, we have transformed this riverfront location into a thriving hub for dining, socializing, and entertainment.
